Works Volume 1, is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released as a double album in March 1977 on Atlantic Records. Following their successful 1974 world tour, the group took a break from recording and touring. They relocated to Montreux, Switzerland and Paris, France to record a new album. Each member was allocated one side of a record to write and arrange their own tracks which were performed by the group

Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were the strong counterparts Emerson needed to unfold his creativity and energy to full-scale. The band was unusual for its three-man structure, and the emphasis of keyboards over guitar. If ever there had been a lead guitarist added, it would have been none other than Jimi Hendrix, who expressed an interest in playing with the trio. 06. Works: Volume 1 (1977). Emerson, Lake and Palmer were already reaching the end of their glory days after finishing Brain Salad Surgery. This was the point when creativity would begin to run short, and botchery, treachery, pretentiousness, overindulgence, and disaster would begin to run wild out of control. Lake co-wrote the album’s lyrics with former King Crimson bandmate Pete Sinfield, who was also signed to the group’s new label. This was the first time any outside musician appeared on an album by the trio.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson; singer, bassist, guitarist and producer Greg Lake; and drummer and percussionist Carl Palmer.

Lake: The previous album we'd made, which was Trilogy, contained a lot of overdubs. When we came to actually perform it live, we had a lot of problems, because there were so many overdubs on the songs that we had a job playing them as a three piece band. So we decided that the next album we made, we would make sure that we could perform it live. Songfacts: Were any of your popular works songs that you very much criticized yourself over when you wrote them? Lake: I probably criticized almost everything in one form or another. When Emerson, Lake & Palmer played the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, Greg and Keith fired off cannons during their performance of "Pictures At An Exhibition. com/watch?v uSm5IQFaTZA (back). 3 ] That would be Tarkus, an armored armadillo that formed the concept of ELP's 1971 album of the same name.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer made their live debut in 1970, releasing their self-titled debut that same year. They were an near-instant hit. Each of the albums they put out in the Seventies – including their landmark Brain Salad Surgery – went gold in the . and several charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s album chart. The ambitious Tarkus, their second album – a deft and grandiose fusion of classical and rock – was a Number One album in the . Lake served as sole producer for most of the group’s works, which sold more than 48 million albums, according to the BBC. Lake believed that.

Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes' most recent records
