Of Montreal’s tenth release is dominated by glitzy, hooky, synth-funk in the vein of I Feel Ya’ Strutter, Like a Tourist, and Girl Named Hello with Kevin Barnes singing in a skittering multi-tracked falsetto that instantly brings to mind Prince (or a Prince parody). Mostly though the album is pure adrenaline fun with a hint of underlying doom - you know the party is nearly over but not quite yet. In the end, False Priest straddles the moment between Saturday night’s cathartic release and the inevitable Sunday morning letdown. False Priest of Montreal.

Like Harris, Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal‘s primary creative agent, seems to see a problem with blind faith. At least the last minute of False Priest would indicate that. No, this out-of-character rant does not ruin the album, but it’s the record’s last impression. It lingers and kind of deflates the often excellent but mostly pretty damn good album that is False Priest. Some things about the album are pitch perfect. The return to live arrangements gives an organic quality that I haven’t really heard since Satanic Panic In The Attic.
On False Priest, the spirit of collaboration does for Of Montreal on record what it has done for the band's live show, building a thrilling, carnival-like atmosphere around Barnes' fractured perspective. False Priest begins to tell a story. You will understand Kevin Barnes' disappointment, resentment, devastation, and joy. There are numerous references to science (genetics, nuclear physics, et., which isn't too unusual. When I began to contemplate an appropriate score for this album, I considered what I would have improved.
False Priest is billed as a more collaborative effort, both on the production end with musical savant Jon Brion and in the spotlighted duets with divas Janelle Monáe and Solange Knowles. The outside influences play the role of Ritalin to Barnes' ADD, but the leaner sound reveals flaws even as it proposes ways to rebuild. The letdown is that Brion's influence sounds less collaborative than cosmetic, as though Barnes showed up with a 95% complete album on his laptop and the duo merely set about punching up Of Montreal's characteristically thin sound. Still, the places where Brion's fingerprints (and gear) are most apparent are some of the album's highlights: the Wendy Carlos-style vocoder on the chorus of "Like a Tourist", the thicker guitar chug of "Coquet Coquette" and "Famine Affair", the lush, astral coda of "Our Riotous Defects".
Hopefully any deserters will come back for False Priest, because this is the record where Barnes and oM put it back together in a graceful and fun package that’s filled with super-slick and hooky songs that sound tailor-made for pop radio in 2010 (if Mars had a radio station, that i. Unlike on Skeletal, the songs are fully realized and produced with smooth perfection by Barnes and co-conspirator Jon Brion.
