On Stadium, an album inspired by his recent move from south Brooklyn to Manhattan, Keszler makes music as expansive as the borough itself. Though geographically close, the areas are worlds apart, and the record matches the latter’s bustle at every step. Listening to Keszler’s music in a place like Manhattan has previously seemed daunting; try navigating overcrowded streets and clogged subways while hearing the disorienting Sudden Laughter, Laughter Without Reason without getting the spins.

Eli Keszler - Stadium As a virtuoso drummer working in electronic music, Eli Keszler has few peers. His playing, whether restrained and precise or unruly and turbulent, displays a fascination with texture and timbre. Though he uses electronic sounds, acoustic percussion is at the core of what he does. It gives his music a physicality that makes his improbably detailed rhythmic patterns seem multi-dimensional. His new album, Stadium, was influenced by a recent move to Manhattan. It exudes both calm and chaos, reflecting the city's intensity with tightly controlled swarms of rhythm and movement. Keyboard and mallet instruments create mysterious backdrops to that urban density. Though the drumming mostly retains its acoustic characteristics, Keszler uses the drum software Sensory Percussion to generate digital bass sounds or sampled claps, as on "Lotus Awnings.

Following the release of his album Stadium, out on Shelter Press last October, Eli Keszler returns with a brand new EP, Empire. Recorded between September and December 2018, this three-track EP is about finding stillness, tranquility and beauty in a dystopian landscape. Eli started touring for Stadium at the start of October 2019 with a performance at legendary New York venue, The Kitchen, the day before he orchestrated a five-camera shoot - check out this remarkable concert-length film:. Eli will continue to tour starting this month with three solo performances as part of Kevin Beasley's exhibition A View of the Landscape commissioned by The Whitney Museum in New York on Saturday January 26th at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm.

Every time I spin this, I’m amazed by the sheer space occupied, just as much as I am with the space unoccupied, and can only regard this album as a masterclass in maximizing the attention and force of only a few instruments through mixing. So, forget avant-jazz and forget experimental. If this album can be satisfactorily characterized by any of the near-useless genre terms that have both graced and cursed music journalism, it’s that this is world music: Holistic, evolving, inhabiting, living
