Salad Days is the twelfth solo album by Adrian Belew, originally released on February 9, 1999. It is a recording of acoustic/unplugged compositions both old and new. The album consists primarily of acoustic reworkings of Belew solo songs along with three King Crimson songs and two sonic collages, the latter being the only tracks original to the album

Adrian Belew is one of the world's most underrated guitarists, and his unique talents truly deserve more attention. He's played guitar with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, and also handled lead vocal duties with King Crimson. On his 1994 solo release Here, Belew not only wrote all of the material himself (co-writing one with Ross Rice), he also played every single instrument and served as the album's producer. His vocal style is quite similar to David Byrne, while his guitar style cannot be compared to anyone - it's completely unpredictable and off the wall.

Caroline Records, Virgin. this record floats between belew's massive revolver/sgt. pepper's era beatles fetish and the influence built up from the david bowie and talking heads records he helped write in the late 70's and early 80's. but, if you follow adrian belew then you are probably a guitar player, or at the least a large fan of the instrument, and. so your question is "what does belew do with his guitars on this record?". and, see, i initially found the record hugely disappointing because the answer is "not much"

Belew's influence from the Beatles is rather evident on this album, with songs that experiment in the vein of Love You To from Revolver in terms of the almost Indian sounds. The song that I speak of in particular is Fly, with its ethereal soundscapes and the twangy acoustic guitar coupled with Belew's multi-harmonied Beatles-esque vocal approach

In that sense Adrian Belew's Here is very Beatlesque. Disc: 1. 1. May 1, 1990. 2. I See You. 3. Survival In The Wild. That said, this is an album of inspired Beatles and the personal quest of Adrian Belew. So take of it what you will. But fascinating and uplifting on some levels and quizzocal on others. But an interesting effort nevertheless. On listening to this again I see the ever insistent motif of "the world is a mess and we can make it better" which can be bleak, but the music makes it appear less bleak. I suppose, after all, this is the quest of the true artist. To reveal truth and not make it so harsh.
