This was Kathleen Ferrier's last commercial recording, made just twelve months after her untimely death from cancer. When this record was made the singer was already suffering from metastatic cancer. I first heard Kathleen Ferrier on a vinyl version of this record in 1953, a few months before Kathleen Ferrier died. It was THE mountain-top experience of my life. The vinyl version was a monaural recording, but in this CD version the orchestral accompaniment has been recreated in true stereophonic sound.

In the course of her professional life the English contralto Kathleen Ferrier made a large number of recordings. In the summer of 1944 she signed a contract with Columbia, which lasted until February 1946. She then transferred to Decca, and remained with them until her death in October 1953. Apart from her studio recordings, many of her live performances and broadcast recitals were recorded, sometimes privately.
