BRUNO WALTER Mahler Symphony n. 9. Лицензиар.

Now one of the cornerstones of orchestral literature, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony had its first performance on June 26, 1912, with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Bruno Walter. Mahler himself, who usually premiered his works, had died in 1911, so the job of introducing the Ninth to the world fell to Walter, his younger friend and protégé, who would champion Mahler’s music for the rest of his career. The concert was given during the Vienna Music Festival Week, which included two other Ninths -Beethoven’s and Bruckner’s, conducted respectively by Felix Weingartner and Arthur Nikisch

Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler was written between 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. It is actually his tenth symphony, as Mahler gave no ordinal number to his symphony with voices Das Lied von der Erde. A typical performance takes about 75 to 90 minutes. The work was premiered on 26 June 1912, at the Vienna Festival by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter. Dutch premiere: 2 May 1918, Amsterdam, with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Mengelberg. UK premiere: 27 February 1930, Manchester with The Hallé conducted by Hamilton Harty. American premiere: 16 October 1931, Boston, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Serge Koussevitzky.

Finally, Walter premiered the piece on June 26, 1912, shortly after Mahler's death, and already with the Vienna Philharmonic. I hesitate to call Walter the closest recipient of Mahler's intentions as can be and his most truthful interpreter, not only because this recording dates from more than a quarter century after the premiere and almost thirty years after the work's completion and any possible conversation Walter might have had with Mahler about it, but also because Mahler himself considered that. There's no discussing an interpreter's choice of a basic tempo, since Mahler gave no metronome marks and even his character indication at the begining is opened to much freedom of interpretation: "in the tempo of a comfortable Ländler" - a Ländler is defined by the Duden dictionary (in backward English translation) as "a slow folk dance in ¾ time".

The Vienna Philharmonic is remarkably full in tone for a recording of that time, and clear in essential details, though the refurbished sound also heightens some audience noises, particularly in the softest passages. Listeners familiar with this work should have no difficulty following the music's direction once they are adjusted to the limited frequency range and occasional distortions of tone; but newcomers are advised to listen to modern recordings first, and then give Walter's vintage rendition a try when the symphony is fully absorbed.
