Many listeners not previously familiar with her will be drawn in by the presence of previously unrecorded songs by Elvis Costello (who contributed three selections), Tom Waits (two), and Nick Cave (one)

Ute Lemper made her name by continuing the German cabaret tradition of the early 20th century, but her 1999 album PUNISHING KISS sees her turn to more contemporary fare. Besides the Kurt Weill she is known for, here she performs songs by Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Philip Glass, Tom Waits and Scott Walker. She is backed up by the Northern Irish chamber pop band The Divine Comedy, who also contribute a few songs, and on several tracks she duets with its frontman Neil Hannon
