When American metal survivors Iced Earth departed their lifelong record label, Century Media, in 2002, they unconsciously (or perhaps consciously) put the finishing touches on an important chapter, not only in their career, but also in the American heavy metal scene's slow but inexorable climb back from shameful early-'90s disgrace to renewed prominence in the new millennium.

Tracks from the CD1 are the "blessed" tracks and tracks from the CD2 are the "damned" tracks. The first European pressing had a print error on the clear inlay in front of the booklet which read The Damned & The Blessed ; all but a handful of copies were destroyed. The three live songs featured on this compilation are all taken from Iced Earth's first live album, Alive in Athens, recorded in 1999 with Matt Barlow as singer.

Consisting of highlights from all the bands albums between 1990 and 2001, including the ‘Alive in Athens’ live album, this is a solid release which still holds up pretty well today, and is a great summary of the bands first eleven years, serving as a great starting point for newcomers. As is always the case with these types of collections, there’s always going to be a couple of tracks missing and a few I’d have excluded, but none-the-less, all the major hits are here.
