The Dark Saga is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Iced Earth. Released on July 23, 1996, it was the band's first album to feature drummer Mark Prator, as well as the last with bassist Dave Abell and lead guitarist Randall Shawver. The Dark Saga was also the first Iced Earth album to be co-produced by Jim Morris, who since then has worked on all of the band's releases.

The Dark Saga' is Iced Earth's most emotional album thanks to Barlow's amazing vocals and Schaffer's terrific songwriting. Matthew Clouse Apr 2, 2018. The heavier Iced Earth albums may stand out more at first, but after several listens, I can almost guarantee that this album will be played repeatedly by any fan of this band. The Bad: There are no glaring weaknesses with Iced Earth's fourth album, but there are two tracks that I am not crazy about in the middle portion of the album. The Last Laugh" and "Depths of Hell" are both decent, but they are certainly not great like every other track on the album.

The Dark Saga is a concept album based on the popular Spawn comic book series. But he soon discovers that she is married to his own best friend. He is left completely alone in the world, and although he has good inside, he is influenced by dark forces. Everything that he desires is denied, even his own death. Thus, the music is generally more dark, emotional, melodic, and simple than other Iced Earth albums. This is not to say that the songs are uninteresting; to the contrary, some of the most amazing Iced Earth songs appear on this album. The crushing heaviness and power remains, but it is entwined with beauty and grace, creating Iced Earth’s most thoughtful and emotional work to date. Tracklisting: Dark Saga.

Though most of the album poses the band in an uncommonly laid-back, non-thrashy mood, the songwriting of leader and guitarist Jon Schaffer is at an all-time inspirational high. In fact the band knocks out both the title track and the excellent "I Died for You" before the furious "Violate" provides the first taste of a double kick drum

The Dark Saga is the answer. Iced Earth slowed their music a bit on this album, but you can’t write an album about Spawn when it is always ripping thrash. The music for a character like this must be slow, moody and dark to set the atmosphere for such a gritty story. The album is not as fast or complex as most of Iced Earth’s albums, but by no means is it of lesser quality. The songs are darker and shorter than previous records, and the lyrics are the best the band has ever done. Overall, The Dark Saga is a great adaptation of one of the best comic books ever, and certainly better than the movie. Spawn’s story is one filled with tragedy, death and despair, and this album manages to capture those feelings and showcases them in one almost flawless album. Perhaps many will not agree with me, but this is Iced Earth’s finest. The Dark Saga - 59%. Big Robot Monster, April 9th, 2016.

The Dark Saga, Iced Earth's fourth album, is very melodic and has simpler songs than what Iced Earth usually write. Even though the tracks are simpler, they are by no means simple. This is a concept album based on the Spawn storyline which I will not explain because it will ruin a good story for you (even though you might already know it). On this album Jon Schaffer plays great rythm guitar, like always. Randall Shawver is a pretty good lead player but nothing that special. Now Matt Barlow is a great vocalist and has great vocal performances on all his Iced Earth albums, and The Dark Saga is no Exception. He gives a great strong and emotional vocal performance here. The bridge goes back to the intro.
