Béla Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G major, Sz. 95, BB 101 (1930–31) is the second of three piano concerti, and is notorious for being one of the most difficult pieces in the repertoire. Bartók himself played the work at the Proms in London under Sir Henry Wood as early as January 7, 1936, an initiative of the BBC music producer Edward Clark. Whether this was the UK premiere has not been confirmed; it was in any case three years before the United States premiere. The first performance in the United States was given in Chicago on March 2, 1939, with Storm Bull as soloist and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frederick Stock. Sir Georg Solti and Bela Bartok (1881 - 1945) were both Hungarian. Bartok is now generally viewed as one of the great composers of the of 20th-century music and was Solti’s piano teacher in the 1930s. Solti said in 1987, I was fortunate enough. I met in my life many great musicians, composers, conductors, piano players. But if I’m looking back on my long life now today, who is the musician whom I admire most, I think it is Bartok. And, the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir George Solti is marvelous. Vladimir Ashkenazy is excellent. By the way, Ashkenazy can be a tremendous conductor, as well. Especially, when he conducts Beethoven's sixth symphony. This set of Bartok's complete piano concertos is an excellent choice at a bargain price.

This Grammy-winning release marks Vladimir Ashkenazy's first of three cycles of the complete Beethoven piano concertos and captures the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conductor Sir Georg Solti at the peak of their careers. Ashkenazy recorded these concertos in May 1971 and May 1972: in 1971 the third and fifth concertos were recorded; a year later the cycle was completed with the first, second and fourth concertos.
