Performers: Alicia de Larrocha, piano London Philharmonic Orchestra (CD 2) Chamber Orchestra of Europe (CD 1) Sir Georg Solti, conductor. Each disc includes a pair of Mozart piano concertos. The music on the first CD, recorded in 1985, has never been released, because, the booklet asserts, post-production work was needed to clean up the acoustics. On the second disc, the finale of the Piano Concerto No. 27 in B flat major, K. 595, is not terribly graceful. The spacious Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, K. 503, on the second disc is the most successful of the large sonata-form movements, but there are lovely effects from de Larrocha throughout, and for her admirers this will be a welcome collection addition.
The Piano Concerto No. 503, was completed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on December 4, 1786, alongside the Prague Symphony, K. 504. Although two more concertos (K. 537 and K. 595) would later follow, this work is the last of what are considered the twelve great piano concertos written in Vienna between 1784 and 1786. Chronologically the work is the 21st of Mozart's 23 original piano concertos.

I have box sets of the concertos by Uchida, Schiff, Perahia, Brendel, and Casadesus. Recently I decided to focus on the individual cds that are still out there by Alicia De Larrocha. Am I glad I did. Simply put, her playing is perfection.
MOZART PIANO CONCERTOS Nos. 25 in C (K. 503) and 27 in Bflat (K. 595): Alicia de Larrocha, piano; London Philharmonic Orchestra. Sir Georg Sant, conductor. Superior musician that he is, Sir Georg is able to forge workable compromises with another respected artist, and perhaps in this instance actually let himself be guided. She is the precisionist, as ever: a musical speed writer could take dictation from her playing and not miss a note. However, it is the Bflat, Mozart's final piano concerto, that shows best what this odd coupling of pianist and conductor is capable of.
