Label headman Manfred Eicher's hands-on aesthetic usually leads him to the producer's chair, and it did here. Berne's music, as evidenced by 40-plus albums, can go against giving up that kind of control. Snakeoil, however, represents a compromise; a true collaboration between them. Berne has appeared on ECM before; on Michael Formanek's The Rub and the Spare Change, and David Torn's Prezens.

New York Tim Berne has been dramatically expanding Snakeoil’s original acoustic chamber-jazz sound world lately – and on this live set, all the way to thundering timpani climaxes, avant-rock guitar howls and squelching electronics, though the Berne trademark of implacably interweaving horn lines tugged by sly rhythm-bends constantly resurfaces. This fourth Snakeoil album for ECM is one of the most viscerally direct and exciting chapters in a consistently creative story.

Snakeoil is an album by the American composer and saxophonist Tim Berne released on the ECM label in 2012. The lack of physical force (though there is plenty of fire) is more than compensated for, in the thought-provoking concept and complexity with a resonant yet unconventional lyricism".

Of the formal Tim Berne groups dating back to his 1990s Caos Totale, only his Bloodcount formation has a larger output than Snakeoil. With the release of 2015's You've Been Watching Me, guitarist Ryan Ferreira joined clarinetist Oscar Noriega, pianist Matt Mitchell and t Ches Smith. Guitarist David Torn, who recorded with Berne on his own ECM outing, Prezens (2007) has produced this and the previous two Snakeoil albums, and also plays on two tracks here.

Tim Berne (born October 16, 1954) is an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and record label owner. Berne he had no interest in playing an instrument until he attended Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. Hearing the album Dogon . 1972) by Julius Hemphill turned his attention toward jazz. He was a fan of rhythm and blues, and it seemed to him that Hemphill was playing jazz with the soulfulness of R&B
