Following the assassination attempt Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London where Exodus was recorded.

If any album could be declared Bob Marley’s masterpiece, it was Exodus. Recorded during a period of exile in London in the aftermath of a gun attack on Marley’s home in Jamaica, it was a musical statement of towering authority which combined visions of Biblical drama with profound expressions of solidarity and tender personal feelings. Released on 3 June 1977, it housed a string of Marley’s biggest and best-loved hits: ‘Jamming’, ‘Waiting In Vain’, ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘One Love/People Get Ready’ and, of course, the title track.
Bob Marley & the Wailers' classic Exodus album, the ninth studio album of the band, was released on June 3, 1977, featuring a new backing band including brothers Carlton and Aston 'Family Man' Barrett on drums and bass, Tyrone Downie on keyboards, Alvin 'Seeco' Patterson on percussion, and the I Threes, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley on backing vocals, and newest member. Julian 'Junior Marvin' on guitar

The song ties together the Biblical story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt to the hope of Rastafarians to be led to freedom. After an assassination attempt in Jamaica in 1976, Marley fled to England where he recorded the song. He had conceived of "Exodus" as the album title before composing the song. The song has a revolutionary theme punctured by its chorus of "Exodus, movement of Jah people. Udiscovermusic wrote that the song was "a rippling, surging, seven-minute call to arms for a nation of displaced souls on the march to a new spiritual homeland. Exodus, commonly considered as Marley’s opus, was released in 1977, after Marley’s biggest commercial success in America, the mostly unremarkable Rastaman Vibration. Marley finally managed to grow from being the cult hero of hazy-eyed frat boys to being a legitimate star, and easily the most successful and identifiable reggae star at the time. But the biggest event of this time period was in December of 1976. Two days before Marley was set to play the Smile Jamaica concert, which was organized by the prime minister of said country, Marley and his wife were gunned down inside his house. But this is still very much Marley’s album, and it shines through with his vocal talent and his lyrical content. Unlike other Marley albums, Exodus shies away from the cryptic story-telling of previous albums and tells much more straight-forward stories.
Exodus is Bob Marley & the Wailers’ ninth studio album. The album was released six months after an assassination attempt was made on Marley while he was in his native Jamaica, which led him to exile in London where Exodus was recorded. The album featured a newer backing band at the time, as the original Wailers disbanded in 1974
This is Bob Marley at his most lionesque. His music can alternately be ferocious in tone and tender in intent. This may have something to do with the duress under which the record was made. Roots" is a B-side-only track, which was backed with "Waiting in Vain. This may not be everything, but what is here has never been presented as completely or as vividly. Track Listing - Disc 1.
