Signals Midwest's Light on the Lake reminds me of being back in 2001. in a good way. Not one of those, “God, why was I into this?” choices, but more like nostalgia with a freshness that was missing at the time. With throaty, Small Brown Bike-esque vocals and some excellent guitar work, this is a band who know how to create a haunting atmosphere (“A Glowing Light”) without losing a sense of fun (“A Room Once Called Yours”, particularly the end). All in all, a very enjoyable punk-tinged rock album.

Light Upon the Lake is the debut studio album by American rock band Whitney, released on June 3, 2016 on Secretly Canadian. The album is Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich's first release since the breakup of their previous band, Smith Westerns, for which Kakacek was the guitarist and Ehrlich was the drummer. Ehrlich was also formerly the drummer of the band Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

The Cleveland band uses their Midwestern sensibility in their sound-it’s gritty, honest, and non-showy-but it’s also too distinct to tie to a geographic area. The band uses a punk influence throughout while playing slowed down and drawn out songs that waver in varied directions without losing sight of that everyman feel. Think about The Riot Before and The Gaslight Anthem getting intimate.

Light Upon the Lake is the moseying debut album of Whitney, a septet built around the core songwriting team of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, both formerly of Smith Westerns. Often surprisingly intimate for a seven-piece, the group makes subtle use of instrumentation like brass and strings to flesh out without symphonizing their country-tinged indie pop. The melancholy opener, "No Woman," begins with cushiony keyboards and a short brass fanfare before Ehrlich - who doubles as the band's lead singer and drummer - introduces his misty, double-tracked falsetto.
