Direct Effect is a band that wears their roots on their sleeves. The tracks on Sunburn are not derivative, but they bring together a few familiar styles from the past couple of decades. Unfortunately, they are unable to replicate similar successes throughout the entirety of Sunburn. The latter half of the album finds Direct Effect falling too often into mid-tempo sections that glaze over the more frantic and driving elements. There is a place for pacing on this album, but at 13 tracks long, the similarly structured songs blend together.

The band is loud to say the least, existing somewhere between '80s hardcore and '90s Nirvana worship. On their debut full-length, the band has measured out close to a half hour of unadulterated, thought out hardcore punk that will make fans of Paint It Black, Pissed Jeans and Fucked Up stand up and headbang. What was only hinted at on the band's debut 7" is now fully formed on "Sunburn"

Direct Effect excels at keeping the ball in play for the entirety of Sunburn, not venturing too far outside of its sloshy comfort zone, but utilizing a full arsenal of ideas. However, by the end of the record, listeners might feel like that arsenal was explored too thoroughly. Whether in the sweeping, frantic solo that shreds relentless at the end of Permanent Vacation or the tonal chaos in the album’s rock ‘n’ roll (a joint) closer, Thoughts of Honey, the group finds its footing in the subtleties of its musical choices.
