As Japanese conductor Masaaki Suzuki's magisterial cycle of Bach's complete cantatas nears its end, there have been some obscure works, albeit performed as precisely and elegantly as usual. It may come as a surprise, then, to notice that Suzuki has saved arguably the most famous Bach cantata of all, the Cantata No. 140, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140, almost for last. The cantata is presented along with two other cantatas Bach composed in Leipzig in the 1730s and 1740s, and the album as a whole is as good a place to start with this series as any other

His nimble Bach Collegium Japan are among those rare such period ensembles that can actually produce an attractive warm sound and shape phrases with something more original than what has today become a kind of dogmatic mezza-voce baroque swell. I'm not usually a big fan of period performances, but I find Suzuki's series enormously attractive for the warmth of the playing and the quality of SACD sound afforded him by the BIS engineers. This brings us three Leipzig cantatas from 1731: BWV 140 "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme", BWV 112 "Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt", and BWV 29 "Wir danken dir, Gott". Starting with the great favourite "Wachet auf", this entire work is brought off most beautifully by Suzuki and his musicians, the choral movements being ideally paced as is usual with this team.

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Wake, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. He composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731.

On the 52nd disc in his monumental undertaking of recording all the sacred cantatas by . Bach, Masaaki Suzuki includes one of the best-loved cantatas of all, Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140. With the famous chorale as the unifying element, Bach creates a majestic first movement which is followed by a couple of the most beautiful love duets in the history of music, between the Soul and Jesus, here interpreted by the soprano Hana Blažíková and Peter Kooij, bass.
