S. Bach: Kantate BWV 166 "Wo gehest du hin?", Rudolf Lutz, Vokalensemble der Schola Seconda Pratica, Schola Seconda Pratica, Guro Hjemli, Terry Wey, Gerd Türk, Markus Volpert, Gallus Media 2008. "BWV" is is, a thematic catalogue of Bach's works. He used a stanza of Georg Grünwald's hymn "Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn" in movement 3 and as the closing chorale a stanza from "Es ist das Heil uns kommen her" by Paul Speratus (1524). Bach structured the cantata in six movements, a gospel quotation in the beginning, chorales as movements 3 and 6, otherwise recitatives and arias.
Johann Sebastian Bach The works of the German composer and organist Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) are the ultimate expression of polyphony. Some of the cantatas from the Weimar period are No. 142, Uns ist ein Kind geborn (Unto Us a Child Is Born), and No. 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (My Spirit Was in Heaviness). Son of Johann Ambrosius Bach, organist and town musician, J. S. Bach was orphaned at the age of 10 and went to live with his elder brother Johann Christoph at Ohrdruf where he had klavier and org. lessons. In 1700 was a chorister at St Michael's Church, Lüneburg, staying for 3 years, learning much from the organist-composer Georg Böhm.
Cantata No. 124, 'Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht,' BWV 124 (BC A30): Meinen Jesum lass' ich nicht. 26. Meines Lebens letzte Zeit, chorale setting for 4 voices, BWV 381 (BC F142). Second, I rate this collection low because of my own unmet goals as listener. What I was hoping for was a recording of Bach's harmonized settings of the whole hymn that Bach used as a source or inspiration for the chorales that show up in his cantatas. I now realize that this was a completely misguided expectation for this collection.
It was the first Christmas cantata Bach composed for Leipzig. The title of the cantata also appears in more modern German as Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes. Bach composed the cantata in his first year in Leipzig, for the Second Day of Christmas. On this day Leipzig celebrated Christmas and St. Stephen's Day in alternating years, with different readings.
