Painting Of A Panic Attack. Feb 19, 2016, 12:51 pm. We’ve waited a long time for this, though I have a feeling you may have waited longer stil. t’s been over three years since we released Pedestrian Verse (I know, lazy bastards, eh?) and we now find ourselves edging closer to bringing you our new album, Painting Of A Panic Attack. After the PV tour wrapped up in early 2014, we spent the following 18 months writing and recording in various rooms until we distilled it all into the 12 songs which make up the album. The song is called Death Dream. It seemed like an appropriate place to begin, as it was from this song that the album title was taken. The title, as with the song, is intended as a beautiful depiction of something horrific. The kind of thing you can’t stop looking at, or perhaps listening to, even though it’s rather painful at times. I’ll leave it at that for now.
Frightened Rabbit’s new album, out tomorrow, is called Painting of a Panic Attack and it opens with a track called Death Dream in which a distant organ and spare piano refuse every ounce of positivity that The Oil Slick drew from. At no point does Hutchison circle back round and laugh at the bleak picture. Despite Hutchison’s initial efforts, it is, like Pedestrian Verse and 2008’s The Midnight Organ Fight before it, and album about a breakup. When Frightened Rabbit reconvened in Wales in late 2014 for their first writing session since the end of the Pedestrian Verse tour, they were ready to start fresh. The record had in many ways been a breakthrough for the band, their first since signing to Atlantic from Fat Cat and making the jump to the majors.
Where the album does part ways with the last couple of Frightened Rabbit releases is in its lyrics. Still gloomy and morbid as ever, Scott Hutchison uses first person more often than in any release since the band’s 2006 breakout record, Midnight Organ Fight. Interestingly, his I has changed on this release, shrouded in more metaphor than ever before. Painting of a Panic Attack also represents Frightened Rabbit at its most restrained. There are no guitar jam outros like Keep Yourself Warm, no solos like in the last third of The Woodpile, and certainly no sing-alongs like the wordless ending to The Loneliness and the Scream.
The fifth studio long player and second major-label release from the petrified Scottish mammals, Painting of a Panic Attack offers up another swoon-inducing, bloody-sleeved collection of erudite indie rock anthems that distill angst, both existential and situational, into fist-pumping crowd-pleasers. Produced with measured aplomb by the National's Aaron Dessner, the 12-track set sees frontman Scott Hutchison returning full-time to the fold after his 2014 solo outing under the Owl John moniker
