Released: 22 April 1980. During Seventeen Seconds, we honestly felt that we were creating something no one else had done. From this point on, I thought that every album was going to be the last Cure album, so I always tried to make it something that would be kind of a milestone. I feel Seventeen Seconds is one of few albums that genuinely achieved that.

Japanese Whispers is a mini-album that collects previously-released songs on various singles from November 1982 to November 1983. It marks a significant change in the band’s sound. After the band had imploded (and dropped down to only two permanent members) from their increasingly depressing albums Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography, upbeat pop songs like Let’s Go To Bed, The Walk and The Lovecats reinvented the band from gloomy doomsters to pop sensations seemingly overnight.

Seventeen Seconds was released on 22 April 1980. It reached No. 20 on the British album charts. Reception and legacy.

Seventeen Seconds’ marks a crucial turning point for Robert Smith and his gang of misery kids, finally reaching the heavier, more substantial sound he pushed for since the band’s early days. Make no bones about it; ‘Seventeen Seconds’ is definitely a gothic and dark outing, and as such, it almost feels like the first ‘true’ Cure album in a sense - the first tentative chapter in an increasing gloomy tome.

The Cure Japanese Whispers. Perhaps The Cure’s hit Friday I’m In Love off their ninth studio album Wish starts with the line I don’t care if Monday’s blue for that reason, but it may just be a coincidence that still fits perfectly fits into that puzzle. The final single on Japanese Whispers, The Lovecats, was recorded in Paris, and according to Robert Smith, was an homage to the Disney film The Aristicats. According to some fan sources, it may have been lyrically inspired by Patrick White’s novel The Vivisector as well. Robert Smith explains below that a song like this was a one-off for The Cure, and there would not be any other songs like this, such as Love Dogs, for example.
