Seventeen Seconds is The Cure’s sophomore album, noted for its move toward a more bleak, introspective, atmospheric and somewhat electronic sound than its punkier predecessor. Robert Smith was inspired by David Bowie’s Low, Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left, Jimi Hendrix' Isle of Wight, Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, and a classical music piece from the soundtrack to the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. He described the album’s sound as more moody, not as upfront (as the band’s debut album)  . I just stayed up for seven or eight hours and wrote because I was so unhappy. It was one of those nights when I felt filled with all the horror of the world. Smith shunned producer Chris Parry’s attempts to make the album’s lead single A Forest more radio-friendly.

During Seventeen Seconds, we honestly felt that we were creating something no one else had done. From this point on, I thought that every album was going to be the last Cure album, so I always tried to make it something that would be kind of a milestone. I feel Seventeen Seconds is one of few albums that genuinely achieved that.

Seventeen Seconds is the second studio album by British alternative rock band the Cure, recorded at Morgan Studio and released on 22 April 1980 by Fiction Records. For Seventeen Seconds, Robert Smith co-produced for the first time with Mike Hedges. After the departure of original bassist Michael Dempsey, Simon Gallup became an official member along with keyboardist Matthieu Hartley. The single "A Forest" was the band's first entry in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart.

Seventeen Seconds is the second studio album by The Cure, released in April 1980 by Fiction Records. It is the only Cure album to feature keyboardist Matthieu Hartley, and was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The album reached number 20 on the British album charts. It is the first album to contain The Cure's now-famous gothic rock sound. The record, mostly a collection of downbeat tracks, features ambient echoing vocals and minimally-treated instruments, with the album's sonic direction driven by its drum sound  . Seventeen Seconds' was the first step The Cure took towards their famous dark and haunting gothic sound, and an album that demonstrates and incredible transition in the bands artistic direction. To think that there was less than a year between the release of the bands debut 'Three Imaginary Boys' and this album is simply astonishing. On 'Seventeen Seconds', The Cure completely reinvented themselves, and through their music painted a dark, haunting and depressing world that proved. 2. 1mo. thinwhiteduke
