The Very Best of Michael Nyman: Film Music 1980–2001 is a compilation album of film music by Michael Nyman, including three previously unreleased tracks (from Nelly's Version and Monsieur Hire) and one from the limited release, La Traversée de Paris.

Michael Nyman first got my attention with his most popular score to date, The Piano. Nyman's music in the film The Piano, I believe, has yet to be surpassed by any piano score to date. An accomplishment very well recieved by the composer himself, who's redone the score over and over again(I would too if I wrote it). Nyman's other works are not too familiar to me but they all sound very good. His work in Gattaca, although, is another one of Nyman's better scores. The score to Wonderland is probably the closes work to The Piano, feeling wise. Very intense and emotional

Also, the Essential Michael Nyman Band album features superior re-recordings of nearly every Greenaway piece represented on this disc. Homage a Maurice" didn't impress me much, and while I love "Time Lapse," I was never much engaged by "Angelfish Decay. Nyman himself has said that some of his best music was written for a film that did not engage him much at all, and whose score was ultimately rejected. This is the highlight of Disc 2, and one of the most rousing pieces Nyman has ever penned.

The Piano is the original soundtrack, on the Virgin Records label, of the 1993 Academy Award-winning film The Piano. The original score was composed by Michael Nyman and is his twentieth album release. Despite being called a "soundtrack", this is a partial score re-recording, as Nyman himself also performs the piano on the album (whereas the film version is performed by lead actress Holly Hunter).

The album – recorded with the Michael Nyman Band – finds McAlmont putting lyrics based on news stories to 11 pieces of Nyman music drawn from different phases of his career. In 2012, he made a soundtrack for film Everyday, keith H. Yoo in 2012 commissioned Nyman to write a 26 minutes long piano quintet in four movements titled Through the Only Window. 5. The Draughtsman's Contract – The Draughtsmans Contract is a 1982 British film written and directed by Peter Greenaway – his first conventional feature film. Nagaokas film features new character designs by Katsuyuki Kubo and features a score composed by Michael Nyman, the former also appeared in an altered form in the film, The Libertine. The singer is contralto Hilary Summers, candlefire as well as piano-only versions of If and Why appear on Nymans 2005 release, The Piano Sings.
