Elgar's music from the First World War is also extremely moving as the desolate 'A Voice in the Desert' demonstrates. This piece is quite ravishingly sung by Mette Christina Ostergaard who understands the deep patriotic feeling of the Great war to absolute perfection. Polonia' is to my mind, one of the finest works Elgar ever wrote. The nail biting martial music mixes with spine tingling quotations from Polish National themes to reach a gloriously romantic and bombastic conclusion. The disc receives one of Classico's best recordings to date and Douglas Bostock's painstaking preparation is definitely in evidence throughout as the Munich players play with true commitment and dedication. Lewis Foreman's notes are a model of clarity and a veritable minefield of information. No serious Elgarian should be without this disc.

Münchner Symphoniker Douglas Bostock (conductor). Longtime lover of British Orchestral Music. Was thrilled to find this set at such a bargain price. There are no notes at all, and simple paper sleeves rather than jewel boxes, but for the price that's no issue. Along with Bax, Arnold, Vaughan Williams, Elgar there are works by some composers that aren't household names. The conductor has specialized in these works, and though I haven't auditioned all the discs I'm quite pleased with the sound quality and the performances.

If you are only ever going to have one collection of the orchestral works of Edward Elgar, let it be this collection led by John Barbirolli. Recorded in stereo by EMI between 1962 and 1966, the sound is amazingly lush, ripe, and deep. Performed by the London Symphony, the Philharmonia, the New Philharmonia, the Sinfonia of London, and the Hallé Orchestra, the playing is uniformly strong, sympathetic, and expressive. And conducted by John Barbirolli, the interpretations are consistently powerful, soulful, and profoundly moving.

Disc: 1 1. I. Andante, Nobilmente E Semplice - Allegro 2. II.

Edward Gardner and his Bergen forces convincingly project the red-blooded and often emotional response to the text with well drilled orchestral playing and evocative singing by the chorus. Another major contribution is made by Australian Heldentenor Stuart Skelton who delivers the challenging tenor solos with unflinching confidence and surety. Filling out the programme are the orchestral Adagio (. 890), the Zdrávas Maria (Ave Maria) from 1904 and Otče náš (Our Father) from 1901, revised five years later. These earlier pieces confirm Janáček’s gifts as a harmonic and instrumental colourist. Given Janáček’s successes in other fields of musical endeavour, it’s easy to forget he was also an influential church musician.
