But on this gritty album the doo wop and Brill Building '60s pop roots are more fully explored. Even without hearing David's haunting lyrics, the handclaps, horns, and backing vocals erupt in a visceral, shambling production that evokes city tenement life on the poorer side of town with West Side Story toughness. Although not a rock opera or even a themed disc, David and brother Serge have crafted a stunning and detailed audio version of the inner city, as seen by scrappy rock & rollers with an ear for the past.

Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky is a trilogy of l novels by Patrick Hamilton. The three books are The Midnight Bell (1929), The Siege of Pleasure (1932) and The Plains of Cement (1934). They focus on three of the people who populate The Midnight Bell pub in London; the stories interconnect

The kids from Philly are back with a rock album of the highest magnitude. 20,000 Streets Under the Sky" is the record with the muscle to shoulder the enormous promise shown by Marah's second release ("Kids in Philly"), one of the great rock records of 2000. Dave and Serge Bielanko, Marah's musical brain trust, wrote all 11 tunes here, and the songs are a collective valentine to Philadelphia.

Four years ago Marah earned an Uncut Album Of The Month accolade for Kids In Philly. Then came the leaden heavy rock of 2002’s Float Away With The Friday Night Gods, on which they made an ill-advised bid for Kings Of Leon territory. The good news is that 20,000 Streets Under The Sky represents a substantial return to form, mainly because it finds brothers Serge and Dave Bielanko going back to their original influences with un-self-conscious pride. The fingerprints of Springsteen (who invited them to play with him last year) are all over songs such as East and Freedom Park

Nothing else on 20,000 Streets can touch "Freedom Park," though harp-ridden riffer "Pigeon Heart" rocks winningly. Body," though taking place in the Bronx, circles back up the beach musically, coming upon a sunset in the closing instrumental title track. It's hard to be a saint in a city with 20,000 streets
