Taken from a recording session he attended a few short months after the release of his star-making Blue Train album in late 1957, The Bethlehem Years features John Coltrane in a context that adds nothing to his recorded legacy. The album makes sense for Coltrane fanatics who want to fill a hole in their history records, but as far as the casual jazz fan is concerned, it should be approached as little more than a marketing trick. Zürich's Institute of Landscape Architecture explores the fragile connection between mankind and nature, turning sounds and images of an alpine glacier into a moving call to action in their multimedia project that merges science with art. Todd B. Gruel.

Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album is a studio album recorded by saxophonist John Coltrane for Impulse! Records that was first released in 2018. The recordings were made in 1963 during Coltrane's Classic Quartet period and lost for decades. Both Directions at Once was recorded in Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey on March 6, 1963, by saxophonist John Coltrane and his Quartet: double bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist McCoy Tyner.

John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension

An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone

RK: The tone, feel, and improvisation style that Coltrane achieves on this album is something that saxophonists are emulating to this day, more than 50 years after its release. That being said, Mr. PC (Paul Chambers) is the unsung hero of this album. He holds down the low end with such a large sense of command, groove, and sophistication. Live! At The Village Vanguard. AM: Since 1957, the Village Vanguard in New York’s Greenwich Village has showcased more monumental moments in jazz music than, well, any other venue. RK: Andrew’s point about this being a turning point album is dead on. You can hear the shift happening in their playing. The band was moving away from the straight ahead (as straight as they ever got) swing to a more modal structure and then into free improvisation.
