Sebastopol is the first solo studio album by Jay Farrar. It was released in 2001 on Artemis Records. All tracks written by Jay Farrar. Jay Farrar – guitars, lead vocals, piano, Roland keyboard, tambura. Jon Wurster – drums, percussion. Matt Pence – drums, percussion. Steve Drodze – piano, Roland & Ensoniq keyboards, melodica, backing vocals

You just can't quite keep track of him these days. First he leaves Jeff Tweedy and the rest of Uncle Tupelo to their own devices and forms Son Volt. And now he's abandoned Son Volt (for at least for a small spell) and has recorded an album entirely his own. While he has denied on at least one occasion that Son Volt has split, Sebastopol does not include the note: "Jay Farrar appears courtesy of Warner Bros.

After the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, most fans would have guessed that Jay Farrar was a cinch for a brilliant solo career, but that hasn't quite been the case. While Trace, the first album from Farrar's post-Uncle Tupelo group, Son Volt, was a low-key masterpiece, the follow-up, Straightaways, sounded like he was treading water, offering up more of the same but without the same level of quality, and the songs simply weren't as interesting.

Sebastopol demonstrates a talent that has a bright future as a solo artist if he wishes. His band, Son Volt, is rumored to be still in his plans. However, if Jay is able to produce this type of output consistently, it might be time to strike it on his own. Son Volt has run its course, producing solid but predictable albums. With a new family, Jay.

For those who were following the plot, it came as no surprise that nothing has been heard from Jay Farrar for the past three years. It also comes as no surprise that he has re-emerged with a solo record rather than a new Son Volt release. What made Farrar's work with Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt so captivating was the juxtaposition of his low-pitched, monotone vocals on high-voltage rock and country music. On the other hand, his black-hole of a voice made some of his slower work impenetrable and even sleep-inducing. Finally though, what marks Sebastopol as a solo album is the same thing that keeps it from being great rather than good, namely, its cumbersome length. A voice like Farrar's starts to drone after ten tracks - let alone 17 - effectively softening its emotional impact.

Talk about Jay Farrar - Sebastopol

Felolv
Jay's album to prove he can be just as adventurous as Wilco circa Summerteeth or YHF. This is a densely orchestrated masterpiece which continues Farrar's excellent penchant for lyric writing, while greatly expanding his sonic pallette. Mellotrons, Tamburas, Melodicas, and various analog synthesizers are featured alongside Farrar's usual Guitar/Bass/Drums setup. An album that deserves more credit than it gets.
