Quicksilver is the sixth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Released in November 1971, it was the first album without original members John Cipollina and David Freiberg. Nicky Hopkins had also left at this point to continue his successful journeyman career. Only Gary Duncan and Greg Elmore remained from the original quartet.

Shady Grove is a 1969 studio album by Quicksilver Messenger Service. Nicky Hopkins, the English journeyman pianist who appears on albums by Jeff Beck, The Rolling Stones, The Who, all four of The Beatles and Steve Miller, joined the group for this album. Hopkins' influence is felt throughout Shady Grove, and his contributions pushed the group in new directions. However, David Freiberg's vocal presence makes the Quicksilver sound of the first two albums still apparent. However, enthusiasts of those albums will find much more to revisit on Shady Grove than those who favored the first two records. Side one. "Shady Grove" (.

Listen to Shady Grove right now. It’s an album that’s also of interest to Rolling Stones fans, because from this third studio release onwards, Quicksilver’s personnel was enhanced by the arrival of one of the most in-demand keyboard players of his generation, the late Stones alumnus Nicky Hopkins. His presence, which also included work on harpsichord, cello and celeste, was an admirable addition to QMS’ existing sound, based on the guitar and vocals of John Cipollina and the viola, bass, guitar and joint vocals of David Freiberg. Greg Elmore added percussive inspiration. Shady Grove was, again, the work of a band confident that their audience would make an adventurous sonic journey with them, even if they were in the process of moving from their psychedelic beginnings into a more pop-oriented sound. Shady Grove" is a traditional Appalachian folk song, common in the repertoire of bluegrass and old-time musicians of the Cumberlands. Sung by both traditional folk musicians and folk revival musicians, it is sometimes identified as a courting song. The song describes "the true love of a young man's life and his hope they will we. Many variants of "Shady Grove" exist (up to 300 stanzas by the early 21st century).
