Ernő Dohnányi (Hungarian: ; 27 July 1877 – 9 February 1960) was a Hungarian composer, pianist and conductor. He used a German form of his name, Ernst von Dohnányi, on most of his published compositions. The "von" implies nobility, and, according to the biography by his third wife, his family was ennobled in 1697 and given a family crest, which she describes in some detail.

The American foursome was originally inspired by the Budapest Quartet, so it's fitting that the Guarneris' final album is dedicated to Hungarian 20th-century greats Ernst von Dohnanyi ( String Quartets No. 2, from 1906, and No. 3, published in 1926) and Zoltan Kodaly ( String Quartet No. 2, from 1916). Although Kodaly's music is more adventurous harmonically, this is all richly tonal music that the Guarneris play with a characteristically sweet sound.
