The opening track from The Pictish Trail’s brilliant new record begins with moody, droning strings coupled with a Massive Attack-style retro hip-hop beat and is inspired by the Coen Brothers’ snowy thriller Fargo. This mismatch of ideas and styles pretty much sums up ‘Future Echoes’ - it’s diverse, it’s original, but most of all, it’s super fun. Pictish - AKA Johnny Lynch - has never been one for seriousness, peppering his live shows with gold jackets and glitter, anecdotes on the wonders of rural Scottish island life and massive electro rave outs to end a moving folky number.
