Deftones is the eponymous fourth studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones, released on May 20, 2003 by Maverick Records. The album features a broader spectrum of musical styles than the band's previous albums, ranging from some of their heaviest compositions to moody trip hop influences, and some recorded mostly with seven-string guitars. It was the band's final album to be produced by Terry Date, whose collaboration with Deftones dated back to their debut album Adrenaline (1995).
Turns out the worst Deftones album is still one of the best of the past decade. 7. Saturday Night Wrist (2006). Historically speaking, a lot of factors have converged to make Deftones’ fifth album the most divisive and misunderstood record of their career. And that mixed-reception on UK shores isn’t just because Pink Cellphone boldly reminded us of our shitty teeth and beer. One factor was that it lacked the anthemic grandeur of White Pony, the bruised beauty of their self-titled record or even the sheer aggression of their first two outings.
Deftones is the self-titled fourth LP from Deftones. It was released on Maverick Records and produced entirely by the band and was the last album to feature production from Terry Date. It spawned two singles, Hexagram and Minerva and reached Gold status with over 500,000 copies sold. Deftones is much different than the band’s previous efforts due to the diverse genres it takes influence from. The album was a critical success despite performing worse than their previous effort White Pony.
An album that turned Deftones into the hottest band on the planet (certainly in the UK), Around The Fur is more thoughtful and features greater depth than Adrenaline. But still was as heavy as any metal band around, as heard on the breakneck lotion or hearing Chino Moreno trading vocal lines with Max Cavalera on Headup. One of modern music’s most challenging and definitive statements.
