Words for the Dying is the twelfth solo studio album by Welsh musician John Cale, released in 1989 by record labels Opal and Warner Bros. The album consists mainly of oral work, read or sung by Cale. It was written in 1982 as a response to the Anglo-Argentinian Falklands War, using poems written by fellow Welshman Dylan Thomas. There are also two orchestral interludes, two other solo piano pieces "Songs Without Words", and finally a song by Cale, "The Soul of Carmen Miranda".

All the great songs and lyrics from the "John Cale: Words for the Dying" album ont he Web's largest and most authoritative lyrics resource. John Davies Cale, OBE (born 9 March 1942) is a Welsh musician, composer, singer-songwriter and record producer who was a founding member of the experimental rock band The Velvet Underground.

Words for the Dying is among Cale's best albums. Musically it does not match many of his more innovative enterprises like British Passport and so many others. Lyrically, there is only one original song by John, so this is not Guts. It has nothing to do with rock and roll. Its Cale singing the poetry of Dylan Thomas with a Russian orchestra and choir at times. That description may make many fans of Cale who have not heard this by now say 'no, not my cup of te. They would be wrong. I recommend this album to anyone interested in a Cale orchestrated exploration into a poet accompanied classically by a heartfelt voice and interpretation of one of the 20th century's grater poets. There is the added bonus of a really good Cale original The Soul of Carmen Miranda.

Arguably the last great album John Cale recorded, Words For The Dying has at its heart The Falklands Suite, Cale’s baroque if heartfelt response to the Anglo-Argentinian War, which finds him setting the poems of his beloved Dylan Thomas to music. When building songs around another’s words, the results often sound forced, but Cale does a magnificent job of compressing Thomas’s lyricism into neat melodic phrases, themselves just components of a vast harmonic mega-structure scored for Russia’s Orchestra of Symphonic & Popular Music of Gostelradio.
