Russian Ballet Dan was an obscure underground Japanese avant-garde band. Formed in 1983, the group was soon signed to the cult underground avant-garde label Nagomu, but by 1986, became one of the most obscure and unknown acts on the label. Nonetheless, Russia Ballet Dan were definitely unique for their quirky stage shows and utmost disturbing style which took influences from gothic, post-punk, psychedelic and folk rock. Russia Ballet Dan appeared to have disbanded by 1989.

This is a list of ballet dancers from the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and Russian Federation, including both ethnic Russians and people of other ethnicities. This list includes as well those who were born in these three states but later emigrated, and those who were born elsewhere but immigrated to the country and performed there for a significant portion of their careers.

One thing remained constant though, and that was their will to dance. Internet forums and publications dedicated solely to ballet didn’t exist during Istomina’s time, but her name traveled far and wide in Russia – everyone knew who she was. The dancer was the Russian Terpsichore whom Alexander Pushkin immortalized in lines from Eugene Onegin. After enrolling in St. Petersburg’s Theater School, it didn’t take long for her to take center stage, graduating at the tender age of 17 as a leading soloist.

Ballet is the national honor of Russian and the visiting card of the Russian culture. Originated in Italy and France, here it found its second home country. It is in Russia where classical ballet traditions have been kept and developed to present them to the whole world again afterwards. The first ballet school was opened in St. Petersburg in 1738. After a few decades, another school was opened in Moscow. Thus started the rivalry of the two ballet traditions – of St. Petersburg and Moscow, the two theatres – the Mariinsky and the Bolshoy – that has continued ever after
