Label: Concord Records, Inc. New motherhood may have inspired Monheit to record "Rainbow Connection," the Muppet heartbreaker, but most of this material is aimed squarely at sophisticated adults. The one-time Long Island Lolita kicks things off with a Corinne Bailey Rae cover before she goes all the way back to "Something Cool" and "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," two classics of the Beatnik era.

The seductive American starlet adds songs by Fiona Apple and Corinne Bailey Rae to her repertoire of jazz standards. The trouble is that every song sounds as if it was conceived for a supper club in 1955. OK for nostalgics, but anyone with a nodding acquaintance with the 21st century may feel left out.

On her seventh album since an auspicious 2000 debut, Jane Monheit is backed by a stellar cast of musicians and cutting a jazzy swath through contemporary pop tunes. Monheit's languid, seductive approach gives these songs womanly heft, especially when she mines her lower register. However, she's not one to swing or vary delivery much, thus the album's overall sleepiness. Fittingly, it concludes with a lullaby – the Muppet Movie classic "Rainbow Connection. Top Track: The disc's one upbeat tune is a saucy "Get Out of Town.

Jane Monheit (born November 3, 1977) is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist for Concord Records. She has collaborated with artists such as Michael Bublé, Ivan Lins, Terence Blanchard and Tom Harrell, and has received Grammy nominations for two of her recordings.
