It's possible to categorize "Field Music", basically consisting of brothers Peter and David Brewis, as "alternative rock", but that's only half of the truth. It's as insatisfactory as filing "XTC" - a band that spontaneously comes to my mind while listening to this album - under "new wave". it's a piece of art, so maybe the term "art rock" is more appropriate. Tones of Town by Field Music. supported by 4 fans who also own Old Fears.

A place of clipped falsetto, melancholic funk, iridescent electro, shimmering post-punk, futurist prog. At times it is both liminal and minimal, at others emotive and external

It's the first time Brewis has played the new material in public and the track, 'Dress Up', sounds fantastic - three minutes of taut, upbeat funk. Afterwards I tell him that the song wouldn't have sounded out of place on Prince's classic 1981 album Dirty Mind. After discussing the merits of each pre-1988 Prince album, Brewis returns to the theme of why Old Fears is his – and he seems happy for me to use the term – funkiest record to date. It is the stuff I like more than the bands who people associate with Field Music. People associate us with proggy-leaning things like XTC, and actually that's not my music. So, I've actually been trying to represent some of my pop and funk influences in the music I have been making.

No longer hiding behind the veil of abstraction occasionally worn by Field Music, Old Fears is an emotional record about the anxieties of modern living, as well as love and relationships

Sunday 6 April 2014 00:00. Whatever David Brewis’s current fears, a terror of being caught standing still must rank highly. This kind of fidgety mentality can devolve into airy vagaries but Brewis’s sparse beats, jagged guitars, spacious electronics, and anxiety-sharpened lyrics make tense work of it. Economic work, too. Ranging from Neptunes-ish minimalism. A self-contained sphere of strange sensations. A place of clipped falsetto, melancholic funk, iridescent electro, shimmering post-punk, futurist prog. It's early Inxs meets Grizzly Bear at DFA HQ.
