Darius Milhaud (French: ; 4 September 1892 – 22 June 1974) was a French composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a member of Les Six-also known as The Group of Six-and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His compositions are influenced by jazz and Brazilian music and make extensive use of polytonality On his return to France, Milhaud composed works influenced by the Brazilian popular music he had heard, including compositions of Brazilian pianist and composer Ernesto Nazareth. Le bœuf sur le toit includes melodies by Nazareth and other popular Brazilian composers of the time, and evokes the sounds of Carnaval.

Colomer-Calliope offers Milhaud's "L'Homme et son désir", another collaboration with Paul Claudel, dating from 1917 - Milhaud was then Claudel's secretary in the latter's function as Ambassador in Brazil, and he had already written the incidental music to Claudel's Agamemnon (1913-14) and Choéphores (1913-15 - that's the Electra-Orestes story) after Aeschylus, of which the third. If it is "L'Homme et son Désir" you are chiefly interested in, you shouldn't start with this version, but go to either Milhaud's or Abravanel's, for the original conception and a more exciting realization.
