The wait ends this summer with Corn, nine tracks Russell recorded in 1982 and 1983. Russell fans know something of the Corn sound from Audika’s debut release, Calling Out of Context (2004), which included four songs from these sessions: The Deer In The Forest Part 1, The Platform on the Ocean, Calling Out Of Context, and I Like You!
Arthur Russell (born Charles Arthur Russell J. May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, producer, singer, and musician from Iowa, whose work spanned a disparate range of styles. Trained in contemporary experimental composition and Indian classical music, in the mid-1970s he relocated to New York, where he became associated with Lower Manhattan's avant-garde community as well as the city's disco scene.
Corn is the latest in a long series of archival reissues of y songwriter Arthur Russell. These tracks, recorded in 1982 and 1983, mostly find him in electro-pop mode, but the set has range and finds him touching on a number of styles. Corn is the latest in a long series of archival reissues of y songwriter Arthur Russell. Arthur Russell’s work remains fascinating because it can never be solved. His music mixed disco, modern classical, singer-songwriter folk, new wave, and dub; sometimes all that would come together in one place, and more often, one or two elements would be focused on for a track or an album-length project.
Arthur Russell - Corn "Arthur was a human musical instrument," said David Mancuso, as relayed in Tim Lawrence's authoritative Arthur Russell biography, Hold On To Your Dreams. He was a very old spirit. He had been around the cosmic circle many times. Not long before Socolov and Russell parted ways in 1985, Russell gave the label three different test pressings of an album made under his Indian Ocean pseudonym called Corn, but Socolov deemed the material too strange for release. More than 30 years later, a version of Corn has been cobbled together from those test pressings, and is finally getting its day on the racks. Even Russell die-hards might be able to stand in Socolov's shoes for a moment.
