Face the Truth is probably the most eclectic of all Malkmus’s work. There are elements of every Pavement album in amongst the tracks, with familiar noodly guitar intros, shouty, jaunty refrains and languid deadpan-rap segments.

Stephen Malkmus is the debut album by Stephen Malkmus, released on February 13, 2001 by Matador Records. Malkmus had planned to create the record by himself, or through a smaller, local label, but eventually accepted the offer Matador asked, and he released it. Pre-release promotional CDs of the album exist under the working titles Jicks and Swedish Reggae. Malkmus intended to release the album as The Jicks, but Matador insisted that the album be released under his own name.

Stephen Malkmus will release Face the Truth, his third album since splitting with Pavement, on May 24th. The album was recorded in Malkmus’ Portland, Oregon, basement and mixed in a studio by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, the Shins). Face the Truth finds the singer going at it solo. sort of. I’m not really sure how to title it yet, he confesses when asked if this is a Stephen Malkmus album (like his self-titled 2001 debut) or a Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks album (like 2003’s Pig Lib). I wanted to go back to more of a bossy style: in my house and at my leisure.

Stephen Malkmus's second post-Pavement venture, 2003's Pig Lib was a bit of a snoozer, to be kind. As a devoted Pavement diehard, I did my best to convince myself that it was a great record, but to no avail at all. A third of the songs seemed to exist solely as vessels to showcase Malkmus's ever-increasing guitar wizardry, while another third were trite pop throwaways. But it was that other third - the good third - that presented the real problem. If Malkmus wasn't going to give us a stunner, I was hoping he'd deliver an absolute clunker

Anybody who's been singed by Stephen Malkmus's past escapades in Pavement and beyond knows that you must be on top of your game before venturing too close. It's a challenge even to climb over the outer railings of Malkmus's mental ballpark, as he out-Becks Beck in his quest for ever lower-fi Americana, growing even Mobier than Moby in his esoteric tinkerings. Face the Truth runs a whole sequence of gauntlets, from the eight-minute safari of No More Shoes to the back-to-front disco-funk of Kindling For the Master, via the suspiciously "normal".
