Rudolph Van Gelder (November 2, 1924 – August 25, 2016) was an American recording engineer who specialized in jazz. Over more than half a century, he recorded several thousand sessions, with musicians including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Grant Green. He worked with many record companies but was most closely associated with Blue Note Records.

This is a great album. Ike Quebec is way too underated. He provided a sound that is both rough and sweet, the best of Ben Webster and Lester Young and yet there is a unique sound of his own,a yawp that had the emotion of Coltrane but could bend back into the lyric. There was a hint in this music of styles yet to come. The Trio gave us recordings of some of the greatest American Music. I make no mention of Jazz at anytime, I think you have American Music, Blues, Folk, Rock and Classical. Then you have music from other countries Classical from Europe, Japanese Music from Japan and so on.

Visiting Van Gelder Studio is no simple thing. There are no busloads of Japanese tourists stopping off on their way to Harlem for hush puppies at Sylvia's. And no tours of local historic interest, though that may occur one day. Ordinarily, you had to be a musician with a scheduled session to enter Van Gelder's hallowed hall of sound. So, walking into this studio where so many geniuses of jazz have recorded is akin to approaching Mecca, or in pop music terms, Liverpool's Cavern Club. It's holy ground zero for jazz

In more recent times, Van Gelder has cut sessions for Highnote, Milestone, Reservoir, Venus, and N2K, to name just a few. In fact, drummer . Monk's N2K album, Monk on Monk, was done at Van Gelder's and has received many critical plaudits, most recently being named Jazz Album of the Year in Down Beat Magazine's Annual Readers Poll. From the first time I interviewed Van Gelder in 1989 for a radio program I was producing I could sense his genuine love for the music and his great interest in the legacy he has had a hand in preserving.

Recorded in December of 1957 by Rudy Van Gelder for the New Jazz label, this one is of course of interest for Coltrane’s contributions, but Draper’s contributions as soloist are pretty terrific in their own right and the rhythm section here (Gil Coggins on piano, Spanky de Brest on bass, and Larry Ritchie on drums) provide swinging support.

Even so, Rudy Van Gelder brought a sense of sophistication to the Blue Note sound  . According to Rudy Van Gelder, Alfred Lion held a belief that good things happen after dark, musically, an allusion to the alchemy that jazz musicians could create in front of a live audience.
