Bear Family's reissue of Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders' second album, Eric, Rick, Wayne, Bob, bears a subtitle of Plus and that "Plus" does cover a lot of material: nine bonus tracks in all, including the 1965 EP Walking on Air and assorted singles and B-sides that haven't made their way onto CD. All of these provide added value to an album that was already appealing. The Mindbenders aren't especially bluesy, as their "Hoochie Coochie Man" amply illustrates, but they have a bright, infectious spirit that flows throughout the LP and its accompanying bonus tracks. It's a period piece but an enjoyable one. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine. 1 Some Other Guy Wayne Fontana 3:6.

By the time Eric, Rick, Wayne, Bob was released by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders in 1965, the band was essentially a defunct unit. Wayne Fontana (the former Glyn Geoffrey Ellis) had dreamed of solo stardom from the start, and he wasn’t shy about those aspirations. Eric Stewart, later of Hotlegs and 10cc, recalled in 1994 that Fontana just walked off stage one night.

The album is packed with versatility, power and sensitivity. Cover versions by Gene Pitney, Willie Dixon among others get the unique Mindbenders treatment - and Wayne Fontana's interpretation of Van McCoy's I Remember Love is a smash. The fetching booklet includes many photos and documents the second half of the band's career. The CD includes nine extras: rare 1964/65 single B-sides and their last EP, Walking On Air, which is sought-after by collectors these days. The final three tracks collect the rare Walking on Air EP (which also included "She Needs Love").

The Mindbenders were an English beat group from Manchester, England. Originally the backing group for Wayne Fontana, they were one of several acts that were successful in the mid-1960s British Invasion of the US charts, achieving major chart hits with "Game of Love" (a number-one single with Fontana) in 1965 and "A Groovy Kind of Love" in 1966. Wayne Fontana founded the band in 1963 with Bob Lang, Ric Rothwell, and Eric Stewart. The group was later joined by Grahame Foote
