Black Sabbath were an English heavy metal band from Aston, Birmingham. Formed in 1968 under the name "Earth", the group's first lineup included vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. This lineup changed their name to "Black Sabbath" in 1969, and remained active until 1979, when Osbourne was fired. Subsequently, the band went through numerous personnel changes over the years, with only Iommi remaining a constant member.

Best Black Sabbath album to have ever been recorded! Best lineup of Black Sabbath, by far: Ozzy Osbourne - vocals Tony Iommi - guitar Geezer Butler - bass Bill Ward - drums. Come back to Sabbath, Bill! We all miss you! Heaven and Hell was good, Master of Reality was good and so was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. But none of them can compare to Paranoid. Each song is a crown Jewel in its own respect, and the replay value is off the scale. The best sabbath album ever alongside heaven and hell. This was metal at its best with sabbath. Ronnie just made sabbath And I think tony, geezer, and martin birch would agree.

Black Sabbath transitioned from Ozzy Osbourne to Ronnie James Dio with 'Heaven and Hell' on April 25, 1980. But, as heavy metal fan worth his salt will tell you, Heaven and Hell was the best of both extremes (and we don’t mean purgatory) when it arrived on April 25, 1980. The greatest irony of it all was that Heaven and Hell didn't even start out as a Black Sabbath record; but rather the first project for proposed new band that, through a combination of record label pressure and the belated involvement of longtime bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward, eventually morphed into the second coming of heavy metal’s founding fathers. These mighty tunes formed the backbone of Sabbath’s strongest album in half a decade, but not without further support from more straightforward, hard rocking numbers, Lady Evil, Wishing Well and Walk Away.

Black Sabbath: ranking their albums from best to worst. Black Sabbath are the forefathers of heavy metal, says Rick Rubin, the producer of the band’s most recent album 13. They may well be the heaviest band of all time. And I don’t know of a more influential band other than The Beatles. 12. Heaven & Hell – The Devil You Know (2009). It was the last album that Ronnie James Dio would ever make – the triumphant final act in a brilliant career. Dio had reunited with Iommi, Butler and Appice in 2006 – the latter again replacing Bill Ward, who bailed out during the early stages of the project. They called themselves Heaven & Hell to avoid confusion with the Ozzy-led Black Sabbath, which had only recently finished touring. But of course, Heaven & Hell was Sabbath in all but name.
