The Black Waltz is the fourth full-length studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Kalmah and their first with keyboard player Marco Sneck. This album has them gravitating more towards thrash metal, which has often been cited as the Kokko brothers' primary musical influence. The vocals have changed to lower death vocals, compared to their higher pitched growls in previous albums.

Another thing which really shows through on The Black Waltz, more so than their previous albums, is Kalmah's absolutely HUGE influence by old Heavy and Thrash Metal bands. There is enough Maiden and Megadeth in this album for both bands to make an album each from it. It really is that present - and Kalmah's unique keyboards and new vocal style give these sounds a new dimension that lends the overall feel of their album a unique sound

The Black Waltz is not a bad album at all. On its own, it’s a very particular melodic death album that’s got an upbeat side to it. In comparison to the first three, it just doesn’t capture that same energy. The Black Waltz might just be Kalmah’s best work ever. They have really progressed quite well and moved far away from the typical and common Children of Bodom structure of Extreme Power Metal or whatever you would like to call it, and have created a truly beautiful and devastating opus, blurring the lines that separate Black Metal, Death Metal and even Power Metal.
