The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s

It starts with Gregorian Chant and Machaut chansons and ends with Gorecki and the Minimalists. Altogether, there are more than 80 composers in the set, with over 400 works for a total of around 120 hours of music.

Dance Bands Music Hall Traditional Pop. Submit Corrections. The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 6: 1939. The sixth volume of The History of Pop Radio, the German History label's 15-CD survey of the years 1920 to 1951, is devoted solely to the year 1939. Where earlier volumes mixed a selection of major hits with standards and other notable recordings, this one is largely devoted to obscure songs and performers.

Aside from wondrous historic music 'Volume 4' is another loving tribute to the eccentric genius of the irascible Harry Smith. Without this offering, you certainly don't have the entire 'Anthology', and although the packaging doesn't match the Smithsonian set, it is very nicely done--just don't try to put it in your plastic CD rack. It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half. 16 people found this helpful.

As apparently the only person in the western hemisphere not to have seen an episode of Glee, it's hardly surprising I found myself neither angered nor elated by the karaoke-pop repossessions of rock history that comprise this soundtrack album.
