Beat Bop" is a hip hop single by American rappers Rammellzee and K-Rob, originally released in 1983 by record label Tartown. It was initially distributed merely as a test pressing. Its cover was designed by New York City graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The result of a disagreement between Rammellzee and Basquiat, the track has been cited as having an influence on artists such as Beastie Boys and many experimental hip hop artists due to its chaotic, abstract sound.

Get funky in the place It’s pathetic dope addicts have to be abused It’s a shame what a day to be a prostitute Life is given to us just to do the right thing Instead of that we came a ho or a big dope fiend Make you feel real bad every time I see. Another bum or brother sleeping on the street In the corner in the morning every night and day It’s a pity so many people try to act gay Everybody’s turning crazy so you’d better believe To do the right things or soon you’ll see Life ain’t a moral joke it’s a serious thing When you’re dealing. This is the mellow they call the Rammell That rocks you with the rhythm that’ll shock your spell When the shake-up kid that wakes you up in the morning Gotta rape with the rhythm like a number one groanin’ MC quick just to make your peanut butter Shock with the rhythm of a number one undercover Break it.

Non-album single, 1996 One of hip-hop’s most powerful mourning anthems put Midwest hip-hop on the map. At the time, Bone Thugs had lost several loved ones, including Eazy E, who signed them in 1993. To this day, when we perform it, said Krayzie Bone, there will be, like, 20 people in the crowd crying. But with a hot beat and classic Jigga lines like I’ve been spending hundreds since they had small faces, Money Ain’t a Thang blew up all the same. Rammellzee and K-Rob, Beat Bop. Beat Bop was a one-off studio rendition of a hip, early-Eighties downtown-Manhattan dance party. Graffiti star-child Jean-Michel Basquiat bankrolled and produced the 10-minute track. In it, frisky 15-year-old rapper K-Rob and raconteur Rammellzee had a hypnotic MC battle over a dubby beat and a violin. It’s an iconic old-school head-trip.

500 copies of this first edition were reportedly pressed.

"Test Pressing" is printed on "Side 2" label.

Neither the artists' names nor the track title appear on the labels.

On some copies, the labels were erroneously affixed to the opposite side of the audio.

This version can be differentiated from the two standard vinyl subsequent 45 RPM editions by the runout groove etchings and by the a 2.8" pressing ring that encircles the labels.

There is also another reissue version with similar runout groove etchings that plays at 33 ⅓ RPM.

The cover art is done by Basquiat / SAMO ????

HI does someone have pictures of a genuine orginal Rammellzee Beat Bop. I can buy one but need some extra info about the thickness of the sleeve, inside of the cardboard and labels etc. Please help.
Simple fellow
See the description: "The original version can be differentiated from the two standard vinyl subsequent 45 RPM editions by the runout groove etchings and by the a 2.8" pressing ring that encircles the labels."

You need to hear the instrumental on a high-end system that can deliver a deep, clear and warm soundstage with focused highs, mids and a tight bottom in order to hear and appreciate the guitar, strings and sprinkles in this production. The instrumental has more musical and crossover club appeal than the vocal, and sounds better slightly pitched up for a touch more "pace". If you know how to play downtempo club/funk music, there are a number of other classics you can follow this up with.

Eight grand +,is this some sort of bad joke?,do you get a fee kidney with it.
Road.to sliver
It's very rare and collectable, that's why. Only a handful of OG copies.
Amhirishes
does anyone really know about the rotation speed it should have ? Thanx
Kigabar
45rpm - take it from someone who was there back in the day.
Llbery
yes the original pressing of this plays at 45 rpm

I used to hate this track back in the day because it was so slow compared to the electro of the time. Time has made me see the error of my ways though and I've grown to love it.http://hiphopbebop.com/2016/01/rammellzee-vs-k-rob-beat-bop.html

What's the custom artwork all about? Did he draw on them?
Erennge
In the hiphop community this is claimed to be the first hiphop record ever made. It is why it is so desired. The records with lyricists from that same period of time and before fall under the catagory 'Rap'.
Togar
Tartown Records was Basquiat's label! He made friends with rappers whilst he was in LA and I believe they all sort of worked on this together. Basquiat was on the cutting edge of music and art (street art!! a huge aspect of the culture of hip-hop) in New York. It's unsurprising then that Basquiat had a large part to play in the production of this record.NOTE: Beat - Bop was a play on the term "Bebop jazz" coined(?) by Charlie Parker, who was a massive influence on Basquiat.
Der Bat
The artwork is done by famous painter Basquiat who passed away during the 80s. This artwork is famous and was recently repressed on limited edition vinyl box. If the record is rare, you can see you get a limited edition painting done by Basquiat. Anything with his name attached will increase price value.
Tinavio
Jean Michel Basquiat did the artwork. That's what initially made it a collector's item. Interesting story about this in Ego Trip's Big Book of Rap Lists.

Original has RAMMELLZEE VS. K-ROB "BEAT BOP" 12" (TARTOWN RECORD CO. TT-001-A-E-1 etched in matrix for side 1 and TT-001-B-E-1 etched in matrix of side 2).
Akirg
but the other reissue has the same matrix - so how can tell the difference if someone buys it on the internet and cannot test play it?

Hi there, my copy plays at 33rpm. All the rest is same as original. Any guess?
Boyn
Thanks Fred....you saved the day with this info. The seller was insistent it was an original and it also played at 45 RPM but the codes were TT001 A and TT001 B there are clearly a few undated bootleg copies around and it would have been a fairly expensive mistake to make.
Agarus
pretty sure originals play at 45 RPM
Darkshaper
Thanks Fred. Think in the listings it says some of the reissues (undated) play at 45 aswell. Tricky.
PanshyR
Does anyone know what the Matrix code should be on an original press please? Help much appreciated!

Also the sleeve is a heavy stock. The rereleases are as thick.
DrayLOVE
The color inside the sleeve on the original press is like a cardboard brown color. On the tar town boot and rerelease the inside of the sleeve is white.
