There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one. My mother was a tailor She sewed my new blue jeans My father was a gamblin' man Down in New Orleans. Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and trunk And the only time he'll be satisfied Is when he's all drunk. Oh mother tell your children Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun. Well, I got one foot on the platform The other foot on the train I'm goin'.

The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans; many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The most successful commercial version, recorded in 1964 by British rock group The Animals, was a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart and also in the United States and France.

The "rising sun" has been a symbol for brothels in British and American ballads. In the traditional folk version of the song, the main character is either a prostitute or a prisoner. The Animals changed it to a gambler to make their version more radio-friendly. It is not known whether or not the house described in the lyrics was an actual or a fictitious place. There is a B&B in New Orleans called the House of the Rising Sun, decorated in brothel style. The owners are fans of the song, but there is no connection with the original place. A. Nobody knows for sure, what the House of the Rising Sun really is. But there are two most popular theories: "The House" was a brothel in New Orleans, which was named after Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and functioned from 1862 to 1874 when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis Street. It was the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had the rising sun artwork on its entrance gate. This could explain the "ball and chain" lyrics. Bob Dylan made his acoustic version of the song for his first album in 1962, but it didn't succeed in a way that The Animals' version did. The Animals performed this song while touring England with Chuck Berry. It went over so well that they recorded it between stops on the tour. Lead singer Eric Burdon explained: "House of the Rising Sun" is a song that I was just fated to.

There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one. Go tell my baby sister, Lord Lord Don't do what I have done To shun that house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun. I'm going back to New Orleans My race is almost run I'm going, going back to spend my life Beneath the Rising Su. Watch the song video. The House of the Rising Sun. more tracks from the album. Known for their gritty, raw, bluesy sound and hard-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their signature songs House of the Rising Sun and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, the band underwent numerous personnel changes, while influencing the later heavy metal music with the riffs of their rock songs such as We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and It's.
