Dylan is an album compiled by Columbia Records consisting of outtakes by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on November 19, 1973. The tracks were assembled and issued by the label with no input from Dylan himself. The album followed the artist's departure from Columbia for Asylum Records, and the announcement of his first major tour since 1966

Bob Dylan on tour in 1975. From the rough, spontaneous energy of the rehearsals that open this box to the set’s climax, on stage in Montreal, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue barely lasted a season: seven weeks in the frenzied autumn of 1975. Written by Dylan in July, 1975 with his collaborator at the time, theater director Jacques Levy, and recorded that month for the singer’s next album, Desire, Isis was a parable of separation and reunion greased with autobiography: the tensions and flux of Dylan’s failing marriage. Strangely, in a Rolling Thunder rehearsal on October 19th, on the first disc here, Dylan plays the song like he is still composing it - on a saloon piano in jumpy-waltz time, ringed with guitar pickers. Yet Dylan adhered to certain conventions as his idea hit the road and small theaters, mostly in New England.
In early 1974, Dylan was coaxed back on the road by a huge offer to play American arenas with the Band. Demand for tickets was off the charts as nostalgia for the Sixties was already sweeping the nation. When the tour finished Dylan's wallet was swelling, but his marriage was falling apart. When he hit the road again in late 1975 he decided to do the exact opposite of the previous tour, opting to travel in a multi-artist caravan and play theaters with little advanced notice. The shows were some of the most powerful of his career. In typical Dylan fashion, he reversed himself completely just three years later when he launched his first world tour in a dozen years. It has become legend that Dylan will change arrangements and switch lyrics at the drop of a hat, which was evident on his jaunt with the Band in 1974, preserved for posterity on Before the Flood
