Produced by David Hentschel. Album A Trick of the Tail. A Trick of the Tail Lyrics. Bored of the life in the city of gold He'd left and let nobody know Gone were the towers he had known from a child Along with a dream of a life. Discussing the adventures of a beast, A Trick of the Tail is the eponymous song on Genesis‘ sixth album, released in 1976. The song was the band’s first single featuring Phil Collins as the lead vocalist, following the departure of the previous one. The song was inspired by parts of the William Golding novel The Inheritors in the sense that its protagonist is a beast which leaves their own kingdom in an attempt to enter the world of humans, and is subsequently put on display in a freak show after the humans fail to believe the story the beast tells them about his land.

This was the first Genesis song to be accompanied by a video. It featured the band gathered around a piano performing the tune. The clip was directed by Bruce Gowers who is best known for his landmark promo for Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody. Joshua from Twin Cities, MnThe cover of the "Trick of the Tail" album features caricature drawings of various characters from the album's eight songs, including the beast from the title track. Robb from Hamburg, NyUntil you said that, I didn't even realize that was Phil, but now I can clearly tell it is him. Kent Lyle from Palo Alto, CaA song about a devil-like creature who leaves his city of gold and is captured by humans and kept in a cage as a freak-show creature.

Also, Genesis were moving away from the barbed pop of the first LP and returning to elastic numbers that showcased their instrumental prowess, and they sounded more forceful and unified as a band than they had since Foxtrot. Not that this album is quite as memorable as Foxtrot or Selling England, largely because its songs aren't as immediate or memorable: apart from "Dance on a Volcano," this is about the sound of the band playing, not individual songs, and it succeeds on that level quite wildly - to the extent that it proved to longtime fans that Genesis could.

Listen to A Trick Of The Tail right now. Released on 2 February 1976, it was a record that saw Messrs Collins, Banks, Hackett and Rutherford following their best instincts. It’s as strong as it ever was, Banks told Melody Maker as A Trick Of The Tail emerged, following that with a bold statement. If it isn’t, we won’t play again. If it’s not as good, there’s no point in playing. The closing ‘Los Endos’ was the only other track ascribed to all four members, but Banks emerged as the most productive individual: two of the others were by the keyboard player with Rutherford, one with Collins, another with Hackett, and Banks wrote two on his own.
