Coltrane "Live" at the Village Vanguard is the tenth album by jazz musician John Coltrane and his first live album, released in 1962 on Impulse Records, catalogue A-10. It is the first album to feature the members of the classic quartet of himself with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. In contrast to his previous album for Impulse!, this one generated much turmoil among both critics and audience alike with its challenging music.

Other Village Vanguard Tapes. This double LP augments the original Live at the Village Vanguard album with six more performances taken from John Coltrane's famous Nov. 1961 engagement.

Coltrane's 1961 Village Vanguard engagement is legendary - both for the quality of the music and for the controversy it generated at the time. This reissue contains the Live at the Village Vanguard album, nothing more, nothing less, and to my mind offers a very poor value for most listeners. There is another release - the Village Vanguard Master Takes - that offers the 3 tracks here, plus two others ("India" and "Impressions"). These are the 5 tunes from the 1961 Village Vanguard engagement released during Coltrane's lifetime

Clearly, Coltrane was running in all directions. The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings consist of 10 pieces given in 22 total performances. Prior to the age of the compact disc. all of this music was spread out over Live At the Village Vanguard, Impressions, The Other Village Vanguard Tapes, Trane's Modes, and From the Original Master Tapes. Introduction of the compact disc conveniently provided a format for the entire release of all of the music from this historic series of concerts. Does John Coltrane belong in the list of most influential jazz artists, along with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis? Without question. So potent and important is John Coltrane's place in the history of jazz, no serious jazz fan can ignore him.
