Collection: Rare French Works for Violin and Orchestra. Composer(s): Faure; Guiraud & Canteloube; Lalo; Saint-Saens. Performer: Philippe Graffin (violin); Ulster Orchestra/Thierry Fischer. Guiraud (civilised and sympathetic teacher of Debussy and Dukas) is nowadays forgotten as a composer; Canteloube’s orchestral works have been virtually extinguished by the popularity of Chants d’Auvergne. Altogether a collection of pieces that need some ingenuity to programme, and generally don’t get it: the slot in the repertoire is occupied pretty exclusively by Chausson’s Poème and Ravel’s Tzigane. The exception is Lalo’s brief Guitarre, designed to be an encore and heard here in an orchestration by Pierné: but when did you last encounter it in concert?)

Performer: Philippe Graffin Conductor: Thierry Fischer Orchestra/Ensemble: Ulster Orchestra. So wrote Saint-Saëns in 1859 at the beginning of his collaboration with the great Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Ulster Orchestra, Rare French works for violin and orchestra. Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Gabriel Fauré Composer. Philippe Graffin (vn). Thierry Fischer Conductor. Poor Joseph Canteloube‚ so famous for the Chants d’Auvergne that we suspect that he couldn’t write tunes of his own! His Poème is lusciously scored and richly violinistic‚ but longbreathed melody building to impassioned rhapsody is its strongest suit (and Chausson’s Poème its closest relative); again one wants to hear Canteloube’s other‚ nonfolkbased pieces. It is Graffin’s recognition that each of these composers needs a different manner and palette that makes this collection so absorbing

Violinist Philippe Graffin has specialized in the classic repertory of his native France, unearthing forgotten pieces and playing new music as well as mainstream works. He has appeared several times on the Hyperion label's series of recordings of neglected Romantic violin concertos. Graffin was born in 1964 in Romilly-sur-Seine, France. In 2002, he drew on French repertory as well for the album Rare French Works for Violin and Orchestra, featuring music by Canteloube, Fauré, the Americo-French Ernest Guiraud, Lalo, and Saint-Saëns. As Graffin's career has developed, he has performed and recorded an increasingly wide variety of music.
