Point of Know Return is the fifth studio album by American rock band Kansas, released in 1977. The album was reissued in remastered format on CD in 2002. Singer/songwriter Steve Walsh left the group briefly during the recording of the album. In an interview on the weekly In the Studio with Redbeard radio show, he would admit that, at this point, he had been something of a prima donna and was attracted by the chance of a solo career.
Kansas’s 1978 acoustic hit song is a reflective song about mortality’s inevitability and one’s insignificant role in the bigger picture. Ironically, the band’s most well known song does not reflect their typical hard rock sound (as in Carry On Wayward Son). There are multiple biblical and literary inspirational sources to the name of the song and its content. The song was the last addition (and most successful one) to their album Point of Know Return. The tour to support the album brought them to huge venues such as New York's Madison Square Garden and the LA Forum, with the tour book including an essay written by Rolling Stone contributor Cameron Crowe. The band became a staple on FM radio at this point, and during this period was one of the most popular rock acts in the country.
