With less sea ice every year, polar bears and many other ice-dependent creatures are at risk. Today’s study, published in Ecological Applications, analyzed data on polar bears in northeast Alaska and the Northwest Territories and documented a 40 percent population loss between 2001-2010 from 1,500 to 900 bears. An urgent need to address climate change. Climate change is the main threat facing polar bears

Polar bears could be sliding towards extinction faster than previously feared, with the animals facing an increasing struggle to find enough food to survive as climate change steadily transforms their environment. A study of nine polar bears over a three-year period by the US Geological Survey and UC Santa Cruz found that the animals require at least one adult, or three juvenile, ringed seals every 10 days to sustain them. Last year was the eighth lowest minimum extent in the 38-year satellite record.

Follow polar bears as we track them across the vast white desert of the Arctic Ocean. Their positions are beamed from collars on the bears’ necks, via satellite to scientists, and then to this site. It allows us to get regular updates about how the polar bears behave in their Arctic environment and how they may be affected by climate change. They can also map a polar bear's range to determine whether individuals travel vast distances or remain strictly within their home range. Over time this information reveals changes and adaptations. For example, in years when there is less sea ice, it will tell us where bears go and how they adapt.

Polar bears are the largest bear speices and supremely adapted to their Arctic habitat, with thick fur and lots of fat to keep them warm. Polar bears are also the largest species of bear. For bears, height is usually measured at the shoulder when the animal is on all fours, according to Polar Bear International. On average, polar bears on all fours are . to 5 feet (1 to . meters) tall, but when standing on its hind legs, an adult male polar bear may reach more than 10 feet (3 m). Lengthwise, they are . 5 to 8 feet (. to . m) from head to rump.

Polar bears are listed under a variety of classifications depending on international, national, and regional regulations. Internationally, they are listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN. In Russia, polar bears are classified as a Red Data Book species, a listing that includes animals considered rare or endangered. On a regional level in Canada, polar bears are listed as threatened in both Manitoba and Ontario under provincial endangered species legislation. Scientists predict that as the Arctic continues to warm, two-thirds of the world's polar bears could disappear within this century.

Polar bears in Russia live all along the Arctic coast from Murmansk in the west to Chukotka in the east, including in the areas where oil and gas development are most likely - the Barents Sea, South Kara Sea, Laptev Sea and Chukchi Sea. Wrangel Island off Chukotka - which was the first protected area in Russia specifically for polar bears - is surrounded by sea earmarked for oil and gas development. There is a problem with polar bear poaching in Russia, and there is a risk that as more come ashore - and as more people work in the Arctic - the numbers of bears being hunted will increase
