The Swinging Blue Jeans followed the classic Merseybeat route to success, from Liverpool skiifie groups to the Cavern, and Hamburg and, finally, an HMV record contract in 1963. Previously known as the Bluegenes, they were made up of Ray Ennis (lead guitar, born May 26, 1942), Ralph Ellis (rhythm, March 8, 1942), Les Braid (bass, Sept. 15, 1941) and Norman Kuhlke (drums, June 17, 1942). Like many of their compatriots, the Blue Jeans were seldom able to re-produce the excitement of their live act on record, and they also suffered from a lack of strong original material
The Swinging Blue Jeans. A few years ago, I went into a photocopying shop in Muswell Hill with a copy of a Ready Steady Go annual, a spin-off from the TV series. The chap in the shop caught me by surprise by saying he used to work on the show, and on other TV programmes in the sixties, something he told me with all the enthusiasm of a retired insurance clerk. It transpired that he had seen the Beatles at the Cavern. They changed their name to Ray Ennis and the Blue Jeans for What Have They Done To Hazel (1968), and shortened it to the Blue Jeans on their last sixties single, the Tony Hazzard song Hey Mrs Housewife. Almost uniquely for a Merseybeat group, they never split - Ray Ennis fronts a version of the group to this day. They were only to enjoy one more charting single, a rendition of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David-authored "Don't Make Me Over," which only reached number 31 in 1965. Ennis and Braid stayed on in the core of the band, amid myriad personnel changes, and kept them going for years after that.

Phil Thompson (drums) was unable to continue with band due to personal reasons so in June 2010, two new musicians joined; Graham Hollingworth (drums) and Jeff Bannister (keyboards/vocals). Ennis then decided to challenge Lovell for the ownership of the trademark but a Court decision ruled that Lovell had exclusive legal rights to the name. The Swinging Blue Jeans continue to perform today, with no original members, under the leadership of Lovell.
